The Market House in Taunton’s town centre dates back to 1772. It originally had further single storey wings on either side but these were demolished in the 1930s to make way for road improvements. The area in front of the Market House continued to be used as a market of one sort or another until 2008.
The Market House was designed by Coplestone Warre Bamfylde (1720-1791) of nearby Hestercombe House. He was an artist, garden designer and amateur architect.
In the centre of the round-a-bout in front is the town’s war memorial
