Market Square - Shepton Mallet

Market Square - Shepton Mallet
Shepton Mallet Market Square with its ornate 15th century market cross and the 'shambles' - a rare example of a medieval market stall used for selling meat.

The market square has been the focus of activity for the town since it existed. In the 16th century it was the scene of fierce fighting between the 2 sides in the English Civil war. A hundred years later it was the site of some of the notorious Judge Jefferys' 'Bloody Assizes' after the Pitchfork Rebellion of 1685.
